Both Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models have the new 150hp Revolution Max 1250 engine. This is a liquid-cooled 1,250cc-displacement V-Twin which will offer a rush of high-RPM power. The overall weight of the Pan America 1250 534lb. wet and Pan America 1250 Special 559lb. wet.

The Pan America 1250 special can be equipped with an industry-first innovation, Adaptive Ride Height (ARH). This is a revolutionary new suspension system which when the motorcycle is in motion, it will automatically switch between a low stopped position and optimal ride height. Mount the Pan America 1250 Special with ease and confidently put your feet down at a stop with the seat height lowering 1-2 inches depending on rear pre-load.
Four Adaptive Ride Height sub-modes are available:
  • Auto Mode: The system quickly determines how quickly to lower the suspension based on the aggressiveness of the braking action. The target is to have the suspension fully lowered when the bike comes to a stop.
  • Short Delay and Long Delay Modes: In both these modes the suspension will be maintained until the motorcycle comes to a stop. This means the bike will keep the same ride height when moving at slow speeds such as trying to weave your way through a car park.
  • Locked Mode: This mode will keep the normal ride height even when the motorcycle has stopped. This mode could be used for taller riders who do not need the lower ride height to be flat footed or when off-road riding requires the full ride height at low speeds.

Ride Modes
The performance characteristics of the motorcycle are electronically selectable with five ride modes. Four ride modes are already pre-programmed on the base model and the fifth can be customised. The Pan America 1250 Special has two additional modes that can be customised by the owner. Both Pan America models include Road, Sport, Rain and Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. Each Ride Mode has a specific combination of power delivery, engine braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) and Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TSC) settings. These Ride Modes can be selected using the MODE button while riding or when stopped.

  • Sport Mode: This is when the rider will have max connection to the motorcycle. This is where you will experience the full potential in performance of the Pan America in a direct and precise manner, with full power and the quickest throttle response. Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System is set to it’s lowest level of intervention for on-road use and engine braking is increased.
  • Road Mode: This is going to be the mode for everyday use as it delivers a balanced performance. A less-aggressive throttle response and less mid-range engine power than Sport Mode, with a higher level of C-TCS and Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System intervention. The Pan America 1250 Special selects a suspension damping setting to create a softer ride than Sport Mode.
  • Rain Mode: This mode is designed for when traction is limited in the rain or under other circumstances. This setting will be used by riders who are getting familiar with their Adventure Tourer. Throttle response and the power output are programmed to lower the rate of acceleration, engine braking is limited and the highest level of C-ABS and C-TCS intervention are selected.
  • Off-Road Mode: This mode is for unpaved roads and moderate off-road situations. A mid-range level of power is delivered and the torque curve is tailored for use in an off-road environment. C-ABS is active in both wheels, with interventions designed specifically for loose, unpaved surfaces. The C-TCS intervention is the same level as Sport Mode.

Harley-Davidson Pan America vs BMW R1250GS
Harley have built this 1252cc Revolution Max engine from the ground up. With 60° V-Twin VVT engine layout spitting out 150hp @ 9,000 RPM, they haven’t just created a bike to tick a box in the Adventure Touring segment, they have created one of the most advanced adventure bikes ever. The Pan America is ready to contend with every competitor. We know that the BMW GS has been the pick of the bunch when it comes to Adventure Touring, but Harley have really surprised us and created something to battle for BMW’s crown. With industry leading technology in the form of Adaptive Ride Height (ARH), the once intimidating sector for the smaller stature will be one that is now considered by new riders. 6.8” Touch Screen Infotainment Screen and a ride height from 32.7”, the Pan America starts at £14,000. This is turning heads and people are realising Harley-Davidson’s gloves are off. In comparison, the BMW R 1250 GS has an air/liquid-cooled four stroke flat twin engine with a rated output 136hp @ 7750 RPM, weighing 548.9lbs compared to the Pan America at 534lbs.

Harley-Davidson Pan America vs Ducati Multistrada V4
Ducati also have a completely new V4 Granturismo engine in their 2021 Multistrada motorcycle. It does however come second to the Pan America with displacement at 1158cc compared to the 1252cc of the Harley-Davidson. When we look at the weight the Ducati Multistrada V4, it comes in at a kerb weight of 529lbs which is lighter than the Pan America weighing 534lbs. Comparing fuel capacity between both the Ducati and Harley-Davidson we see they come out pretty similar with the Multistrada just edging it with 5.8 US gal. compared to the 5.6 gal. of the Pan America. The Ducati Multistrada V4 starts at £15,495 which is £1495 more than the Pan America which has an exceptional starting price of £14,000.
